We read with great interest the recent article by Wetzstein et al. that reported the overall mortality of Mycobacterium genavense infections and impact of antimycobacterial therapy.

and the epidemiology is relatively poorly understood in comparison to the genetically related Mycobacterium tuberculosis. NTM is also not notifiable and routinely monitored in most settings. For many countries, microbiological data is not even publicly available.

Global trends of pulmonary infections with nontuberculous mycobacteria: a systematic review.
For some regions and continents, the epidemiology has been reviewed, but to our knowledge, no study has summarized the distribution of species among patients with NTM pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) in Europe. Therefore, we performed a systematic review of PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science, on July 10, 2022 to identify studies with species distribution data among patients with NTM-PD, the most common manifestation, in Europe (as defined by the WHO regions https://www.who.int/countries). Only studies with data on NTM-PD were eligible for inclusion, regardless of whether guideline criteria were used, while studies without clinical data (i.e., only microbiology) were excluded. Among others, we extracted the number of patients fulfilling diagnostic guideline criteria.
