First report of Candida auris in Oman: clinical and microbiological description of five candidemia cases.
Candida auris is an emerging multi-drug resistant fungal pathogen. It was first described in Japan in 2009 but has since been reported worldwide, including large nosocomial outbreaks in five continents. It is associated with bloodstream, wound, and other infections, especially in critically ill patients. Hospital outbreaks reported to date have proven difficult to control despite enhanced infection control measures. In England, 221 cases have been reported between 2013 and 2017 (160 colonisations and 61 infections including 30 candidaemias) across 20 hospitals with three significant outbreaks in specialist units.
